1st guard recognizes potential spinal injury. Blows whistle and approaches victim. Victim is assessed for a spinal injury if any doubt in 1st guard’s mind. |
1st guard immediately vice-clamps victim while still standing. |

2nd guard approaches 1st guard and victim. 2nd guard should provide support behind the victim by holding under the arms or on the back. |
In a slow and continuous motion, 1st and 2nd guard lower victim to a sitting position on the ground |

2nd guard places a trap-clamp or a “long-short” clamp at the victim’s head. 1st guard releases vice clamp and prepares to lower victim to supine. |
The victim is slowly placed into a supine position while 2nd guard holds clamp. NOTE: A towel or blanket may be required to place under the back of the head to prevent the head from hyperextending. |

1st guard places victim in a vice clamp while 2nd guard places sandbags on either side of the head. |
1st guard stays with victim treating for shock and obtaining history. 2nd guard contacts EMS and brings equipment to victim. Both guards begin secondary survey. |
